Flammable refrigerants: dilution by ventilation

Most of the alternatives to refrigerants with high global warming potential are flammable. Dilution in air is a simple yet effective solution to minimise the adverse effects that are connected with the release of flammable or toxic materials. In the case of flammable substances, the aim of dilution is to decrease the concentration of the fluid to a level below the lower flammability limit (LFL).

The safety standards that are commonly used in RACHP (refrigeration, air conditioning and heat pump applications) include several different ventilation methods to dilute flammable refrigerants.

The aim of this blog by CAREL’s HVAC/R Technical Knowledge Manager, Miriam Solana Ciprés, is to analyse the different ventilation options that are included in these European standards: EN 378, EN 60335-2-89 and EN 60335-2-40.
